O.C. - Word...Life (1994)

Man, I love D.I.T.C. A crew of really underground MCs with underground producers with no intention of trying to cross over is just my bread and butter. I got love for 'em all, except Fat Joe (fuck that sellout). But, one of the D.I.T.C. MCs that never sold out was Omar Credle, better known as O.C. Of all the D.I.T.C. MCs, O.C. is probably the most down to earth. The other MCs in D.I.T.C. talk about guns and murder, but O.C. doesn't try to rap about stuff like that just because his boys Big L, AG, Lord Finesse, etc. do it. In fact, O.C.'s 100% against fake thug posturing (see "Time's Up"), not that his boys are guilty of that. But, he comes off with the same raw skill, commanding voice, and attitude as his peers (see "O-Zone"). That kinda reminds me of Jeru the Damaja, which is a good thing. Listen to the darts that Omar shoots out on "O-Zone", "Time's Up","Constables", or "Let It Slide" and you'll see what I mean. Listening to the near classic Word...Life not only made me a fan of O.C., it made me a fan of Buckwild as well. His beats are amazing, and those that may not have liked his uber-underground beats on Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous may enjoy these ones more. What's the problem with Word...Life? Just a very small problem. I coulda done without "Ma Dukes". The beats for that sounds WAAAAYYYYY too R&B for a underground cat like O.C. But the rest of songs are great. Think of my rating as 4.75 stars rather than 4.5. Any fan of hip-hop needs to download this quick (since it's outta print). Hardcore fans will love the D.I.T.C. attitude that O.C. displays and alternative fans will like the fact that O.C. ain't about guns. And this is probably the only D.I.T.C. album I'd recommend to non-fans. With lines like "I'd rather be broke and have a whole lot of respect", O.C. and D.I.T.C. were meant for each other, and Word...Life is proof of that. Even in a year where a bunch of hip-hop classics were released, this one still stands out.
