We first met Chungking Mansions in a forest in Wales; light beams piercing pockets of open sky and blanketing the canopies of trees above us in a technicolour glow. Herds of modern day Druids shuffled through the clearings; painted head to toe in mystical UV symbology and kicking up twigs and dust in their path as they made their way quickly to one of the many bassdrums emanating from all corners of the immediate Emerald landscape. Under the stars and surrounded by booming, low slung frequencies and the excited chatter of thousands of juiced-up revellers; we shared a smoke and became life-long friends.
Fast forward a year and Chungking Mansions presents to HOTL the 'Wild Guide to Anywhere' - a resplendent beat tape that pays homage to the universal love of nature and our place within it. Recalling warm and fuzzed out TV and nature documentary musical motifs from his youth with rolling hi-def beat design and icy blasts from windswept synthlines; WGTA is a collection of feelings, auras and locations - always slightly magical and ambiguous with it's content, yet similarly, always up close and hazily familiar to the listener. It's this juxtaposition and delivery that makes WGTA a repeated listen. Features a deep and heady collab with fellow woodsman Pine Grove.
