Country: Ireland. Label: Ninthwave Media. "Empire State Human" formed in 1999. Band members are Aidan Casserly, Seán Barron and Lar Kiernan. "Empire State Human" create contemporary song and instrumental based electronic music, with a retro-electro edge. Their music is a combination of analogue and digital synthesized sound, mixed with powerful rhythms and overlaid with strong pop vocal melodies. Since signing with Ninthwave Records in 2002, "Empire State Human" have released a number of CDs and Digital albums with various labels including "Pop Robot", "Music For Humans ", "Alpha & Omega", "Liquid Blue", "Urbanism", "Live On Mars", "Digital City", "Cycles" They have also composed a film soundtrack ‘Screwback’ as well as music for a Sony PlayStation advert "Anything Can Happen " , studio album 2009 - "Audio Gothic" The biggest surprise on this album is the presence of ex-Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flur on the track "Melancholic Afro". The track itself is powered by an early "Front 242" like e-guitar giving it a true vintage sound and even without the adding the name of the "Kraftwerk" member to it, it stands like a rock, very solid that is. The whole album bathes in an atmosphere as if the band is checking out what boundaries are possible, tracks like "Ghosts in America" reveal an "Empire State Human" which will develop in a more mature band leaving the easier tunes for other bands.
The band also dug up some pearls from their past catalogue which deserved some more attention. Actually, this is quite a good idea and something that other bands should do as well because it clearly shows the evolution a band goes through. In the case of "Empire State Human" it results in improved versions making the original tracks stronger. re-recorded "Leap of faith" as well as "I work for the government" which were both pulled from the band's 2002 "Pop Robot, the album which actually launched them. Straight forward, melancholic synthpop as only "Empire State Human" knows how to produce. All in all Softsynth celebrates bands like "Empire State Human" doing what they do but ultimately wishes they could develop some balls...
