Crawling in pain, gasping his last breath With his empty flask, he moves to his death In this cold world of concrete that isn’t his own His glazed over eyes see his long lost home Seeing flowers, and hills and fields, edged with pines Seeing children, and feeling warmth on winter days Called them brothers and sisters too, back in better times Vivid colours, so clear and good, back in better times With such warmth on his mind, doesn’t feel the cold blast Of his lonely deathbed in the subway shaft As he draws his last breath the crowd fails to see The dead tramp in the corner, with his soul now set free Seeing flowers, and hills and fields, edged with pines Seeing children, and feeling warmth on winter days Called them brothers and sisters too, back in better times Vivid colours, so clear and good, back in better times || And the ambulance men – they finally drop by – Feel strange when they notice the look in his eye When they drag the stiff body up the cold steps of stone See a frozen small tree that the tramp knew back home Ω They too long for waters from nature’s clear well But they can’t see what’s wrong with our concrete hell || Flickering tvs, hurrying crowds Worrying offices and dark smelling shrouds “By the way, I saw a dead man on the subway today” “Really?
